Armenia is interested in obtaining observer status in BRICS – Mirzoyan

YEREVAN, March 12. /ARKA/. Armenia remains interested in obtaining observer status in BRICS and in exploring what this cooperation and format can bring to the region, said Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan in an interview with the Indian outlet WION.
He recalled that Armenia had participated in the activities of both BRICS and the SCO (Shanghai Cooperation Organization).
BRICS (short for Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa) is an association of nine countries: Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, the UAE, Iran, Egypt, and Ethiopia. It was founded in June 2006 during the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, with the participation of the economy ministers from Brazil, Russia, India, and China.
Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan attended the BRICS summit, which included heads of state, in Kazan from October 22-24, 2024. At the same time, in November 2024, Armenian Minister of Economy Gevorg Papoyan stated that the issue of joining BRICS is not currently on Armenia's agenda.
In June of last year, the Secretary-General of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), Chang Min, expressed the SCO Secretariat's interest in expanding mutually beneficial relations with Armenia during a meeting with Pashinyan in Yerevan.
