Armenia ratifies Ashgabat agreement on establishment of international transport and transit corridor

YEREVAN, May 8. /ARKA/. Armenia joins the Ashgabat agreement on the establishment of an international transport and transit corridor. To this end, the Armenian government on Thursday ratified this agreement between the governments of Iran, Oman, Qatar, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan, as well as the Memorandum of Understanding on the implementation of the agreement between the governments of Iran, Oman, Qatar, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan, which is an integral part of it.
According to the rationale for the decision, Armenia's accession to this agreement will create new opportunities for integration into the transport corridor between the countries of Central Asia and the ports of the Persian Gulf and the Arabian Sea, as well as for using the transport and transit potential of the participating countries.
Joining the Ashgabat Agreement will contribute to the creation of reliable conditions for the transportation and transit of goods and passengers through the territories of the participating states, facilitating multimodal transportation, optimizing transportation costs, enhancing the transit role of the republic, improving the safety of transportation and creating equal conditions for transport companies of the participating countries.
Joining the Ashgabat Agreement will ensure access to international markets through a transport corridor, harmonization of transit documents required for international transportation, simplification of customs procedures, as well as non-discriminatory access to the transport infrastructure of the participating countries.
The agreement will regulate the process of implementing logistics transportation by various modes of transport between the participating countries, and will also help stimulate mutually beneficial economic and business ties between the countries, expand cooperation and enhance the transit role of Armenia.
The decision notes that the government of Armenia will take steps to ensure the further development of special relations with Iran, within the framework of which measures will be actively implemented to strengthen the economic component, especially in the direction of developing logistics, infrastructure and implementing regional transport connectivity programs.
The government will initiate the strengthening of friendly and mutually beneficial ties with India and the establishment of new forms of cooperation, and will also promote the expansion of interaction with the countries of the Near and Middle East in areas of mutual interest.
