Armenia to apply for membership in Permanent Court of Arbitration

YEREVAN, 10 January. /ARKA/. Armenian National Assembly Committee on State and Legal Affairs approved today a bill designed to apply for membership in the Permanent Court of Arbitration.

Armenia will have to ratify two conventions on peaceful settlement of international disputes, adopted in The Hague back on 29 July 1899 and 18 October 1907.

‘Both conventions have a purely symbolic significance..... For the first time in the history of international law, the principle of peaceful settlement of disputes was formulated, as well as the obligation for the states to settle disputes exclusively by peaceful means,’ Armenian Representative on International Legal Affairs Yeghishe Kirakosyan said.

According to him, after ratification of these conventions Armenia will become a member state of the Permanent Court of Arbitration. Thus, the country will be able to present candidates for arbitrators, who in turn will have the opportunity to participate in the consideration of cases involving disputes between states or investment arbitrations.

‘Currently, 124 countries are members of the Permanent Court of Arbitration. By ratifying these conventions, Armenia will send an important signal from the point of view of foreign policy about the peaceful resolution of disputes, establishment of peace, as well as the prohibition of the use of force and the threat of its use,’ Kirakosyan added.

He recalled that several cases involving Armenia are currently under investigation at the Permanent Court of Arbitration.

‘This is an additional incentive for Armenia to become a member of this institute,’ Kirakosyan emphasised.

According to him, the annual membership fee in 2024 was 1,923 euros.-0-
