Armenia, Moldova have untapped potential to boost bilateral cooperation

YEREVAN, July 11. /ARKA/. Before the commencement of the Summit of the European People’s Party Eastern Partnership Leaders in Chisinau, Moldova, Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan had a meeting with the President of Moldova Nicolae Timofti, Sargsyan’s press office said.

It said the presidents discussed a wide range of issues on how to invigorate Armenian-Moldovan political dialogue and cooperation in trade and economic areas. President Serzh Sargsyan was quoted as saying that since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1992, the existing potential for the strengthening and development of bilateral ties has not been fully utilized. 

“Now it is necessary to conduct active bilateral work and through frequent reciprocal visits and contacts on different levels to fill the gap because it emanates from the interests of two friendly peoples,” he said. Serzh Sargsyan stressed also the importance of cooperation in the framework of international organizations.

The private and later extended negotiations of the presidents were followed by document signing ceremony. In particular, the parties signed a cooperation agreement between the ministries of cultures, an agreement between the ministries of agriculture and an agreement on cooperation in economy, science and technology.

President Serzh Sargsyan met also with Moldovan Prime Minister Iurie Leanca and discussed opportunities for developing mutually beneficial cooperation between Armenia and Moldova in different areas. With this regard, the parties stressed the important role of the Armenian-Moldovan intergovernmental commission on trade and economic cooperation. 

Armenian-Moldovan trade in 2012 slashed to $1.731 million from $2.141 in 2011. Armenian exports to Moldova stood at $502,000, and imports from Moldova at $1.2 million. --0--
