YEREVAN, February 14. /ARKA/. Armenia's Rescue Service has sent the second batch of humanitarian aid weighing over 25 tons to earthquake-hit Syria at the order of the Armenian Prime Minister, the Rescue Service said.

The batch includes food, medicines and medical supplies. The cargo was shipped to Syria from Yerevan's Erebuni airport. Earlier, on February 9, Armenia sent over 30 tons of humanitarian aid to Syria and 100 tons of aid to Turkey.

The aid to Turkey was sent by five trucks through a border gate between Turkey and Armenia that was opened for the first time in 35 years. The border was closed by Turkey in the 1990s in a sign of solidarity with Azerbaijan that fought at that time with Armenian forces of Nagorno-Karabakh.

The relationship between Armenia and Turkey is strained by World War I-era mass killings of 1.5 million Armenians in the Ottoman Empire, which amounted to a genocide. Turkey rejects the genocide label.

In December 2021, the two countries appointed special envoys to help normalize.-0-
