Armenian defense ministry discusses shortening military service term
YEREVAN, March 22. /ARKA/. Armenia’s Defense Ministry is considering the possibility of reducing the length of military service for military personnel on combat duty, minister Davit Tonoyan said at a government meeting on March 21.

Tonoyan was commenting on a draft law submitted by the opposition Bright Armenia party that calls for not assigning servicemen with military service length less than a year on combat duty. It also calls for extending the period of military training of servicemen from the current 5 to 12 months.

“The extension of the training period will lead to unreasonable delay of the process, its repeatability, which will adversely affect both the organization of the service and the performance of combat missions,” he said.

At the moment, the Ministry of Defense is considering the possibility of reducing the 24-month period of compulsory service for military personnel on combat duty,” the minister explained.

At the same time, according to Tonoyan, the ministry is considering the possibility of extending the service length for conscripts who are not on combat duty. In this regard, the Minister proposed that the government does not accept the draft law of the opposition. The government agreed with him. --0----
