YEREVAN, September 18. /ARKA / Armenia’s first deputy defense minister Davit Tonoyan met yesterday with Christoph Bierwirth, UNHCR representative to look into the situation around an
Armenian army conscript Hakob Injigulyan, who accidentally strayed into Azerbaijani-controlled territory east of Nagorno-Karabakh and was captured by Azeris August 8.
Earlier the Armenian defense ministry said an investigation was underway in order to determine the details of the incident and adopt the necessary measures for the safety of the captive.
Tonoyan was said to focus on Azerbaijani news reports claiming that the Armenian servicemen asked to send him to a third country. According to Tonoyan, if this is true then an UNHCR representative in Baku should get involved in the process to secure for the Armenian soldier the status of refugee.
Tonoyan also reiterated that Injighulyan will not be prosecuted at home if repatriated, especially that there are no grounds for it.
Bierwirth was said to have promised to convey Armenia’s position to UNHCR leadership. The ministry said the Armenian side is ready to discuss future possible such cases with Azerbaijani authorities on bilateral level without international or third party mediation. -0-
