YEREVAN, February 11. /ARKA/. Heghine Bisharyan, head of Orinats Yerkir faction in Armenian National Assembly, is convinced that political parties’ membership in European People’s Party will give them a chance to adopt the best practices of European countries’ legislative and executive institutions.

On Friday, the Republican Party of Armenia as well as Orinats Yerkir and Zharangutiun (Heritage) parties were granted an observer status in European People’s Party by the overwhelming majority of votes.

Speaking at parliamentary briefings, Bisharyan said that Armenia can benefit from cooperation with Europe’s leading parties, lawmakers and members of governments.

Galust Sahakyan, leader of Republicans’ faction in National Assembly, who spoke at parliamentary briefings as well, said that this membership will also make it possible to speak about Armenia’s national and state problems from the international floor.

“Frequent meetings will also make closer our ties with international community representatives, and this is an important factor for the state,” he added.

Republican Party of Armenia and Orinats Yerkir are members of the ruling coalition, while Zharangutiun is an opposition party.

Republicans have 63 seats in the 131-member National Assembly.

Their leader is Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan.

Orinats Yerkir, a centrist party headed by Arthur Baghdasaryan, national security secretary and former speaker of Armenian Parliament, has eight seats in the parliament.

Zharangutiun is a liberal democratic party founded by Raffi Hovhannisian, former foreign minister, in 2002. The party has six members in the National Assembly.-0---
