Armenian opposition party calls for recognition of Karabakh independence

Armenian opposition party Zharangutyun (Heritage) has reiterated its calls for official recognition of Nagorno-Karabakh's independence following the latest escalation of tension in the conflict zone, saying in a statement that Azerbaijan's irresponsible actions can lead to unpredictable and devastating consequences for the attacking side.

YEREVAN, April 2. /ARKA/. Armenian opposition party Zharangutyun (Heritage) has reiterated its calls for official recognition of Nagorno-Karabakh's independence following the latest escalation of tension in the conflict zone, saying in a statement that Azerbaijan's irresponsible actions can lead to unpredictable and devastating consequences for the attacking side.
"Zharangutyun strongly condemns the resumption of severe hostilities in Nagorno-Karabakh and calls on the international community to take measures to curb the aggressive desire of Azerbaijan to destabilize the region,' the statement says.
"We call to recognize the independence of Nagorno-Karabakh Republic and help its citizens in achieving peace and stability in the region. We also call upon all Armenians to unite efforts to defend our homeland,' it said.
Another oppositional Armenian National Congress (HAK) issued a statement saying it is ready to consolidate with the authorities against the common external threat.
"The Armenian National Congress strictly condemns Azerbaijan for the aggravation of tension in the Karabakh conflict zone and states that regardless of its differences with the current government it remains committed to preserving political stability and protection of the country's security in case of external threat,' the statement said.
Armenia's defence ministry said today that Azerbaijan on Friday night launched a massive attack along the Karabakh frontline using tanks, artillery, and helicopters. According to Nagorno-Karabakh defense army, they shot down two Azeri helicopters, three battle tanks, two drones and inflicted also "serious losses" on the enemy.
According to the latest reports from the frontline, heavy fighting is still underway.-0-
