Armenian president dismisses two top army officers

YEREVAN, June 25. /ARKA/. Armenia’s President Armen Sarkissian signed on June 24 two decrees to dismiss the heads of two departments of the armed forces.

They are Ishkhan Matevosyan, the head of the Engineering Troops Department and Armen Vardanyan, the head of the Air Defense Force Department.

Ishkhan Matevosyan and Armen Vardanyan were among those top military brass who had signed a statement of the General Staff of the armed forces in February 2021, demanding the resignation of the government and Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan.

The signatories to the statement argued that Pashinyan and his government were no longer able to make adequate decisions for the Armenian people after the defeat in the Nagorno-Karabakh war last autumn.

Nikol Pashinyan called it a coup attempt, accusing them of misrule and incompetence. -0-
