Calls made by the opposition do not receive support from Armenian society – Nikol Pashinyan
YEREVAN, November 25. /ARKA/. There is internal political tension in Armenia, but the truth is that the calls made by the opposition have not received wide publicity in the Armenian society, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said in an interview with TASS.

“And I think that the issue of power, which was formed by the people, can be resolved only by the will of the people. The fact is that the calls made by the opposition do not receive support from the Armenian society. This needs to be stated,” he said.

In response to a question about how he assesses the possibility of early parliamentary elections, Pashinyan said that now the primary task of the government and all political forces in Armenia should be to restore full stability and security to the country, explaining that he means not only internal security, but and external.

“I have published a roadmap for a six-month period, and over the next six months we must work to stabilize the situation. I mean the political situation, the security situation and economic stability. After that, we will consult with our society, people and political forces and make a decision on further events and further steps, what we should do next,” he said.

Along with that, Prime Minister Pashinyan noted that “this does not mean that everyone is happy with the situation that has now emerged in the context of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, the situation in Nagorno-Karabakh, and so on”.

“But, to be honest, I am also not very happy, we are all unhappy with the situation that we have. But we need to understand what alternatives we have. We must work not to make the situation worse, but to stabilize the situation and improve it. And, as I said, I mean not only internal, but also external stability and security, as well as economic security and stability, and we must focus on these issues. This does not mean that the government believes that everything is fine and everything is in order. On the contrary, we believe that first we must not aggravate the situation, not make it worse,” he explained.

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan stressed that now there are many questions about the return of Artsakh citizens to their homes. “It is necessary to provide some social guarantees for the citizens of Nagorno Karabakh and those people who have lost their homes. It is necessary to stabilize the social and economic situation in Armenia,” he explained.

The premier answered the question whether protest moods threaten to disrupt the agreements on Karabakh.

“I don’t think, because the Armenian society agrees that in the situation when this document was signed, there was no real alternative that would be better for us. That is, in my opinion, it is precisely this understanding of the signed document in the Armenian society. Another question that we still need to analyze, understand and answer the questions of why everything happened and why we came to such a situation. But the fact that at the time of November 9 there was simply no alternative, I think that such a perception of the situation is present in the Armenian society,” he said.

About political situation inside Armenia

In recent days, 17 political parties staged rallies in Yerevan demanding Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan to resign. In their words, they were outraged by the signing of the statement on the cessation of hostilities in Artsakh on November 9 by Pashinyan and the leaders of Russia and Azerbaijan, which provides for significant territorial concessions in favor of Azerbaijan.

Pashinyan on November 18 presented a 15-point roadmap to overcome the current situation in the country as well as to establish stability and security. According to him, it will take six months to launch the irreversible process of implementing these measures. Pashinyan said that in June 2021 he will make a report on the implementation of the roadmap, based on the results of which, taking into account public opinion and reaction, a decision will be made on further steps.

About Artsakh War

From September 27 to November 9, the Azerbaijani Armed Forces, with the participation of Turkey and foreign mercenaries and terrorists recruited by it, carried out aggression against Artsakh at the frontline and in the rear using rocket and artillery weapons, heavy armored vehicles, military aircraft and prohibited types of weapons (cluster bombs, phosphorus weapons). The strikes were delivered also at civil and military targets on the territory of Armenia.

On November 9, the leaders of the Russia, Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a statement on the cessation of all hostilities in Artsakh. According to the document, the parties stop at their positions. The city of Shushi, Agdam, Kelbajar and Lachin regions pass over to Azerbaijan, with the exception of a 5-kilometer corridor connecting Karabakh with Armenia. A Russian peacekeeping contingent will be deployed along the contact line in Karabakh and along the Lachin corridor. Internally displaced persons and refugees are returning to Karabakh and adjacent regions, prisoners of war, hostages and other detained persons and bodies of the dead are exchanged. -0---
