Caucasus Institute head: Armenian Russian relations are determined by geopolitics, not by personality change
YEREVAN, June 21, /ARKA/. Armenian-Russian relations are determined by geopolitics, not by personality change, according to Alexander Iskandaryan, the head of the Yerevan-based Caucasus Institute.

Speaking at an international conference “Caucasus-2018” today, he cited an interview by Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, who was asked why he changed his mind about Armenia’s membership in the Russia-led Eurasian Economic Union after coming to power.

Iskandaryan said if translated into human language, Pashinyan said: “It does not matter what I used to say when I was not in power.”

According to Iskandaryan, these words show an extremely important thing: the Armenian-Russian relations, like the relations within the framework of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, are not determined by the change of personalities. They are determined by such serious geopolitical structural factors  as the presence of Turkey on the one hand and Azerbaijan on the other.

“Of course, there have always been mistakes, but strategically top leadership both in Russia and in Armenia understand that the structure of Armenian-Russian relations should be left as it is,” Iskandaryan said. --0--
