Department of State: durable peace possible between Armenia and Azerbaijan

YEREVAN, May 16. /ARKA/. Durable peace is possible between Armenia and Azerbaijan, Vedant Patel, principal deputy spokesperson for the Department of State, told a May 15 press briefing.

His remark was a response to a journalist's question about the outcome of the Brussels talks between the leaders of Armenia, Azerbaijan and European Council president, held in Brussels on may 14.

'Obviously, the U.S. was not a party to these talks.  But as a follow-on to the talks that we hosted in Arlington, we continue to believe that these are important steps forward as we continue to find that a durable peace is possible between these two countries,' Patel said.

Foreign Ministers of Armenia and Azerbaijan Ararat Mirzoyan and Jeyhun Bayramov had talks in Washington on May 1-4 and discussed normalization of relations. The talks were facilitated by U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken.

On May 14, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, European Council President Charles Michel and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev held a trilateral meeting in Brussels. They discussed the reopening of regional transport and economic infrastructure, border delimitation and security, the settlement of relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan, the rights and security of the population of Nagorno-Karabakh, as well as other humanitarian issues. -0-
