ECHR orders Azerbaijan to provide information about abducted Armenian servicemen

YEREVAN, May 31. /ARKA/. In response to Armenia's application, the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) gave Azerbaijan a week to provide information about two Armenian servicemen, who were kidnapped on May 26 by an armed group of Azerbaijanis who crossed into Armenia illegally.

The deadline for Azerbaijan is June 6. The European Court of Human Rights decided and demanded that Azerbaijan provide the following information.

1) Are the two servicemen really under Azerbaijani control as prisoners of war or in another status?

2. If yes, the Court demands that Azerbaijan provide information about the conditions of the servicemen's detention and medical examinations, the Office of Armenia's Representative on International Legal Affairs said.

On May 28 the Office requested that the ECHR apply an interim measure against Azerbaijan in connection with the illegal kidnapping of two Armenian servicemen. The Armenian side demands that Azerbaijan refrain from violating rights of Armenian military servicemen, provide information about places and conditions of their detention, state of their health.

Two Armenian soldiers, Harutyun Hovagimyan and Karen Ghazaryan, were kidnapped on May 26 when they were delivering food by a Kamaz truck to a military post in the southern Armenian province of Syunik. According to Armenian Investigative Committee , an armed group of Azerbaijanis illegally crossed the state border of Armenia.
