YEREVAN, July 13. /ARKA/. Recurrent elections to the Yerevan Council of Elders (the Armenian capital’s legislative assembly) will be held on September 17 this year, the Armenian government decided on Thursday.

The powers of the current Council of Elders, elected on September 23, 2018, will expire on October 10 this year.

The Yerevan mayor's position (the mayor is elected by the Council of Elders) has been vacant since the resignation of the former mayor Hrachya Sargsyan on March 17 this year. His duties are temporarily performed by First Vice Mayor Levon Hovhannisyan.

The ruling Civil Contract party's candidate for the vacancy is Vice Mayor Tigran Avinyan. According to various sources, other potential candidates for the post of mayor are former human rights defender Arman Tatoyan, David Khazhakyan from Bright Armenia party, Mane Tandilyan from the Country for Life party and Artak Zeynakian from the Hanrapetutyun (Republic) party --0—
