YEREVAN, January 10. /ARKA/. EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, has proposed extending the deployment of the EU monitoring mission in Armenia for another two years.

“EU member states have welcomed the proposal and are currently discussing the necessary legal acts with the relevant bodies of the EU Council. The Council’s decision on the extension is expected in the coming days,” the press service of the High Representative told Azatutyun.

About the EU Monitoring Mission in Armenia

The EU MonitoringMission in Armenia (EUMA) began patrolling on February 20, 2023, as part of the Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP) and has a two-year mandate. In January 2024, the EU Council decided to increase the mission's size by 50%, raising its personnel to 209.

EUMA conducts patrols from six operational bases in Kapan, Goris, Jermuk, Yeghegnadzor, Martuni, and Ijevan. The mission aims to stabilize the situation in Armenia's border areas, enhance trust and security for people in conflict-affected regions, and create conditions that support the normalization of relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan, with EU assistance.

In October, Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan stated that the EU was considering extending the mandate of its civilian observer mission in Armenia.
