YEREVAN, November 19. / ARKA /. Richard Giragossian, director of the Yerevan-based Regional Studies Center, questioned today the chances of Armenian opposition parties to field a single presidential candidate for next February polls.
Speaking at a news conference he said all previous elections had been preceded by consultations between opposition forces, real and formal, but they never were able to nominate a single candidate.
An MP from the opposition Armenian National Congress, Levon Zurabian, said earlier that the Armenian National Congress and the Prosperous Armenia Party might nominate a single candidate for the upcoming presidential election, but he would not name a potential candidate arguing that it may hinder the process of consultation between the two parties.
The Prosperous Armenia Party positions itself as a moderate centrist political force with a liberal slant. The party was founded in 2004 by Gagik Tsarukyan , who is an MP, head of the National Olympic Committee of Armenia and president of Multi Group. In the National Assembly the party controls 36 seats.
Before this past May 7 parliamentary elections this party was part of the ruling coalition. After the election it refused to make a new coalition with the ruling Republican Party of Armenia of president Serzh Sargsyan. -0-
