German lawmakers: Bundestag majority ready to vote for recognition of Armenian Genocide

A majority of Germany's Bundestag members will vote in favor of the Armenian Genocide recognition bill, Albert Weiler, a member of Bundestag from the ruling Christian Democratic Union of Germany, told journalists on Friday.

YEREVAN, May 6. /ARKA/. A majority of Germany's Bundestag members will vote in favor of the Armenian Genocide recognition bill, Albert Weiler, a member of Bundestag from the ruling Christian Democratic Union of Germany, told journalists on Friday. 

According to media resources, the bill may be put on the Bundestag's floor on June 2. 

«I think the resolution on the Armenian Genocide will be upheld by a majority of votes,» Weiler said. 

In his words, consultations among representatives of parliamentary factions are under way now. 

He also said 'genocide' term will be present in the title of the bill. The then Germany's responsibility for the Armenian Genocide is mentioned in the bill as well. 

The German lawmaker pointed out that there is a provision in the document that relates to Germany’s support in normalization of relations between Armenia and Turkey. 

In 2015 Armenia marked the 100 anniversary of the Armenian Genocide, the first genocide of the twentieth century.  According to Armenian and many other historians, up to 1.5 million Armenians were killed starting in 1915 in a systematic campaign by the government of Turkey.  Turkey has been denying it for decades. 

The Armenian genocide was recognized by tens of countries.  The first was Uruguay that did so in 1965. Other nations are Russia, France, Italy, Germany, Holland, Belgium, Poland, Lithuania, Slovakia, Sweden, Switzerland, Greece, Cyprus, Lebanon, Canada, Venezuela, Argentina, 43 U.S. states. 

It was recognized also by the Vatican, the European Parliament, the World Council of Churches and other international organizations. ---0----
