Hrayr Tovmasyan elected member of Armenia’s constitutional court

By a vote of 64 to 27 an Armenian parliament member Hrayr Tovmasyan from the ruling Republican Party of Armenia was elected today by the parliament as a member of the Constitutional Court.
YEREVAN, March 2. /ARKA/. By a vote of 64 to 27 an Armenian parliament member Hrayr Tovmasyan from the ruling Republican Party of Armenia was elected today by the parliament as a member of the Constitutional Court.
Hrayr Tovmasyan, who served as head of a parliamentary committee on state and legal issues and protection of human rights, resigned on February 16 after he was nominated by his party for the position of a member of the Constitutional Court. Gagik Harutyunyan, the chairman of the Constitutional Court, is 70 years old and is no longer eligible to hold the job.
According to the Constitution of Armenia, Constitutional Court judges are elected by at least three fifths of the total number of parliament members for a term of twelve years. The Constitutional Court consists of nine judges, three of whom are elected at the proposal of the president, three are proposed by the government and the other three by the General Meeting of Judges.
The Constitutional Court elects the chairman and deputy chairman from its members for a term of six years without the right to reelection.
Hrayr Tovmasyan was born in 1970 in the village of Darakert in the Ararat region. After serving in the Armenian army he graduated form the law faculty of a local university. From 1996 to 2001 he held various positions in the legal department of the Constitutional Court.
From April to August 2001 he worked as a deputy minister of nature protection. In 2010-2013 as justice minister. In 2014-2017 he worked as chief of parliament staff. In April 2017 he was elected to the National Assembly. He is married and has three children. --0-
