YEREVAN, May 15. /ARKA/. Hungary's Ambassador to Armenia Anna Maria Siko (residence in Tbilisi, Georgia) presented today her credentials to Armenian President Vahagn Khachaturyan, the presidential press service reported.

It said Khachatryan congratulated Siko on her appointment after a long hiatus in diplomatic relations between the two countries.

"We very much appreciate your appointment. Armenia and Hungary, as centuries-old friendly countries, will continue to cooperate, and we will do everything to ensure that our bilateral relations truly develop. I am confident that you will make your personal contribution to the development of our relations," the president was quoted as saying.

"We have waited long enough for this moment, and today we have the result. We worked hard, and first of all I want to thank all those who work in Hungary, as well as in Armenia, who made all this possible," the ambassador said.

The president and the ambassador were said to discuss the perspectives of economic cooperation between Armenia and Hungary, especially in such areas as education, tourism and culture.

Cooperation in international organizations, particularly in the European Union, and the exchange of best practices for the development of democratic institutions were mutually stressed.

Armenia broke diplomatic relations with Hungary in 2012 after Budapest extradited to Azerbaijan Ramil Safarov, who was sentenced to life imprisonment in Hungary for the murder of Armenian officer Gurgen Margaryan.

Safarov murdered Gurgen Margaryan with an axe while he was sleeping. Both were in Budapest to take part in a NATO Partnership for Peace program.

Hungary agreed to transfer Safarov to serve the remainder of his sentence in Azerbaijan, however, . Safarov was instead issued a pardon by Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev on his return.

On December 1, 2022 Armenian and Hungarian Foreign Ministers Ararat Mirzoyan and Péter Szijjártó agreed to restore full diplomatic relations. As a follow-up to the meeting, the two governments were to appoint non-resident ambassadors to explore possibilities for developing relations. -0-
