YEREVAN, May 21. /ARKA/. Armenia's decision to join the Eurasian Economic Union was pragmatic, Latvian President Andris Berzins said Thursday as met with his Armenian counterpart Serzh Sargsyan in Riga where the latter traveled to attend the summit of Eastern Partnership and the European People's Party, the press office of the Armenian president reports.

According to the report, Berzins welcomed Armenia's multi-faceted and balanced approach saying that the effectiveness of this approach is increasingly becoming understandable in Europe.

The two presidents discussed prospects for further development of relations between their countries and Armenia's cooperation with the European Union.

Sargsyan said that Armenia is interested in development of economic relations with friendly Latvia and confirmed again Armenia's determination to implement democratic reforms.

The European Union's Eastern Partnership Program implies political association and economic integration of the European Union with Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine. In 2014, Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine signed the Association Agreement with the Euroepan Union.

Armenia formally joined the Eurasian Economic Union (EEU) of Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan on October 10 after President Serzh Sargsyan signed a corresponding accession treaty with Russian president Vladimir Putin and presidents Nursultan Nazarbayev of Kazakhstan and Aleksandr Lukashenko of Belarus at a summit of the Russian-led bloc held in Minsk.

The treaty came into force on January 1, 2015. Kyrgyzstan will join the union on May 29. ---0----
