Minsk Group co-chair country ambassadors call for de-escalation of tensions on line of contact

The U.S. embassy in Armenia said in a statement today that U.S. ambassador John Heffern, Russian ambassador Ivan Volynkin, and French Chargé d'Affaires Isabelle Guisnel called on Vigen Sargsyan, Chief of Staff to the President of the Republic of Armenia to express condolences to the families of soldiers who lost their lives during recent events along the line of contact of Nagorno-Karabakh and the border of Azerbaijan and Armenia.

YEREVAN, August 7, / ARKA /. The U.S. embassy in Armenia said in a statement today that U.S. ambassador John Heffern, Russian ambassador Ivan Volynkin, and French Chargé d'Affaires Isabelle Guisnel called on Vigen Sargsyan, Chief of Staff to the President of the Republic of Armenia to express condolences to the families of soldiers who lost their lives during recent events along the line of contact of Nagorno-Karabakh and the border of Azerbaijan and Armenia.
It said the Chief of Staff provided an update on the current situation. The ambassadors from the Minsk Group Co-Chair countries urged restraint and de-escalation of tensions from all sides, called for strict respect of the ceasefire agreement, and expressed their hope the upcoming meetings in Sochi will contribute to the peaceful settlement of the conflict.
The meeting of Armenian and Azerbaijani presidents in Sochi, hosted by Russian president Putin is scheduled for August 9.
Over recent days, simmering tensions boiled over into the fiercest clashes seen since a ceasefire was agreed to in 1994. At least 25 Azeri and five Armenian soldiers have lost their lives.” -0-
