YEREVAN, May 4. /ARKA/. The governor of Saint Petersburg Georgy Poltavchenko does not rule out that a monument may be installed to Iosif Orbeli in the Northern capital.
Iosif Orbeli, prominent Armenian Soviet orientalist and archeologist, academician of the USSR Academy of Sciences, was the first president of the Academy of Sciences of Armenia (1943-1947) and headed the Hermitage Museum in 1934-1951.
“I don’t rule out the possibility, especially because he was a man who did a lot for our city,” Poltavchenko told reporters on Saturday, in finalizing his visit to Yerevan.
Poltavchenko said they discussed with the Armenian side some landmark measures to develop the friendship between Yerevan and S. Petersburg, including installation of monuments.
The Yerevan municipality provided land for construction of “Saint Petersburg” hotel in Yerevan to accommodate the representative office of the Russian northern capital. Similarly, land will be provided for construction of a Yerevan business and culture center in Saint Petersburg, Poltavchenko said.
The Yerevan municipality and the government of Saint Petersburg signed an agreement on trade, economic, scientific, technical and humanitarian cooperation for 2015-2020 in Yerevan last Thursday. –0--
