YEREVAN, March 18. /ARKA/. Anna Naghdalyan, spokesperson for the Armenian foreign ministry, commented on restrictions on the movement of Armenian citizens and trucks in Georgia’s territory. She recalled that cargo transportation between the two countries is uninterrupted in accordance with the agreement reached between the governments of Armenia and Georgia.
In recent days, the Armenian foreign ministry and Armenia’s diplomatic missions in Georgia and Russia have repeatedly stated that, due to adverse weather conditions, the Gudauri-Kobe section of the Stepantsminda-Lars highway remains closed.
“At the same time, it was stated that the entry of Armenian citizens into the territory of Georgia is prohibited on all routes (through the Armenian-Georgian, Russian-Georgian and Turkish-Georgian borders, as well as by air and sea routes),” Naghdalyan said in a statement posted on the foreign ministry’s website.
She said that there are accumulations of trucks both in the territories adjacent to the Armenian-Georgian (Bagratashen-Sadakhlo) and Russian-Georgian (Upper Lars-Kazbegi) borders, and on various sections of the Mtskheta-Stepantsminda-Lars highway.
According to Naghdalyan, the passage of trucks to Russia, as well as from Russia to Armenia through the border in Upper Lars, as well as on the Armenian-Georgian border, was suspended only due to heavy snowfall. As soon as the highway opens, trucks will be able to cross the Armenian-Georgian and Russian-Georgian borders.
“Despite our advice, there are Armenian citizens at the Russian section of the Upper Lars checkpoint who want to cross the Russian-Georgian border. Considering that, due to adverse weather conditions, the road will not open until the decision of the Georgian government on the ban on entry of foreign citizens into the country (00.00 hours 03/18/2020), we advise our citizens to return to the place of departure and to use the airways to arrive in Armenia as soon as possible, in particular, from the airports of the nearby cities of Mineralnye Vody, Krasnodar, Rostov-on-Don,” she said.
The spokesperson for the Armenian foreign ministry again called on Armenian citizens to refrain from returning to Armenia through the territory of Georgia and to use exclusively air routes.
“We urge our citizens to assess the situation soberly,” Naghdalyan added.
According to the latest reports, there are 78 confirmed cases of coronavirus infection in Armenia. The first case of coronavirus infection in Armenia was confirmed on March 1. The patient has already recovered and let out from the hospital. Among those infected are Armenian citizens from Iran and Italy (residents of Yerevan, Echmiadzin, Meghri and Charentsavan), people in contact with them, as well as one Italian citizen and a visitor from France. The vast majority of those infected, including one schoolchild, are residents of Echmiadzin.
On March 16, the government of Armenia declared a 30-day state of emergency to prevent the spread of coronavirus. --0---
