Pashinyan says his will to sign peace treaty with Azerbaijan is unwavering
YEREVAN, November 16. /ARKA/. 'Our political will to conclude a peace treaty with Azerbaijan in the coming months is unwavering,' Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan stated in the parliament today.
He said Armenia cannot sign a peace treaty alone and Azerbaijan's signature is also needed.
'Is it realistic to sign a peace treaty before the end of the year or in the coming months? The three main principles of peace, in fact, have been agreed upon with Azerbaijan during trilateral meetings (facilitated by European Council president Charles Michel) in Brussels," Pashinyan said during the discussion of the 2024 budget.
He said one of these three principles is a mutual recognition of each other's territorial integrity based on the maps of the USSR General Staff. He also said that an agreement has been reached that Armenia and Azerbaijan have no and will have no territorial claims to each other.
The next principle of the peace treaty is to unblock regional communications on the basis of sovereignty and jurisdiction of each side.
"If the principles of the peace treaty are agreed upon, why do we not sign the peace treaty? The major reason is mistrust of the parties. Because every time we see in Azerbaijan's statements its refusal of agreements and intentions to plan aggressive actions, and they see the same in ours, which negatively affects the work on the text of the peace treaty," Pashinyan said.
At the same time, he said that there is a need to agree on a number of key points, one of which is creating a mechanism for resolving disputed issues under the peace treaty, and the second is the creation of security guarantees.
"My government intends to intensify diplomatic work to resolve these issues and we will notify the public about the processes," Pashinyan said. --0-
