Prosperous Armenia party leader not to run for presidency
YEREVAN, December 12. / ARKA /. Prosperous Armenia Party leader Gagik Tsarukian said today that he will not contest next presidential election slated for February 18, 2013. The written statement came after an emergency meeting of the party’s governing body and parliamentary faction.

Gagik Tsarukian said his party will not field a presidential candidate and will not support any other contender in the February 18 polls.

The statement did not specify the reasons for the move. It said only that Tsarukian thanked his allies for their “unconditional support and trust.”

The Prosperous Armenia positions itself as a moderate centrist political force with a liberal slant. The party was founded in 2004 by Gagik Tsarukian, an MP, wealthy businessman and president of the National Olympic Committee of Armenia.

Before the 2012 May parliamentary elections the party was part of the ruling coalition. In the previous government it controlled four ministerial portfolios and several governors.

After the election, the party refused to make an alliance with president Sargsyan’s Republican Party of Armenia which partnered with Country of Law party.  -0-
