YEREVAN, July 9. /ARKA/. A delegation of the ruling Republican Party of Armenia will travel to Batumi in neighboring Georgia to attend a summit of the European People's Party, science and education minister Armen Ashotyan, said today. Armen Ashotyan is also a deputy chairman of the governing party.
He said the summit involves also parties from Moldova and Georgia, which along with Armenia are embraced by EU’s Eastern Partnership Program.
Ashotyan said an invitation to take part in the summit was sent also to Azerbaijan, although none of its parties is a member of the European Peoples’ Party.
Ashotyan said relations between the Republican Party of Armenia and the EPP encompass all areas. He said the youth wing of the Republican Party has filed an application for membership in the youth structure of the EPP, which will be discussed in September.
Three Armenian parties - the Republican Party of Armenia, its junior coalition partner Orinats Yerkir (Country of Law) and opposition Zharangutyun (Heritage) party were granted observer status in the European People's Party earlier this year.
Initiated by the EU "Eastern Partnership" focuses on Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Moldova, Belarus and Ukraine. It offers six former Soviet republics the prospect of deeper integration with the bloc in return for political and economic reforms.-0-
