Senior Republican Party member wants Prime Minister Sargsyan to carry on

A senior member of the Republican Party of Armenia that won the majority in May 6 parliamentary elections spoke today against replacing prime minister Tigran Sargsyan. Speaking at a news conference, deputy chairman of the governing party, Galust Sahakian, said this is the prevailing opinion in the party.

YEREVAN, May 18. /ARKA/. A senior member of the Republican Party of Armenia that won the majority in May 6 parliamentary elections spoke today against replacing prime minister Tigran Sargsyan. Speaking at a news conference, deputy chairman of the governing party, Galust Sahakian, said this is the prevailing opinion in the party.

"I do not think the incumbent prime minister must be replaced,’ he said, adding that he is aware of who of the current cabinet ministers will retain their jobs and who will be replaced.’ He declined to elaborate. He said also that ex-parliament speaker Hovik Abrahamian will be given a high post.

The new parliament will most likely convene for the maiden session on May 31. On the same day, President Serzh Sargsyan will dismiss the government and appoint a prime minister, who will be given 20 days to form a new Cabinet.The Republican Party won a landslide victory in the election with 44.02% of the vote. In the new parliament it will control 69 seats out of 131. The Prosperous Armenia of businessman Gagik Tsarukian won 30.12% and will control 37 seats, the opposition Armenian National Congress won 7.08% and will have 7 seats.

Zharangutyun (Heritage), the Armenian Revolutionary Federation and Orinats Yerkir (Country of Law) won over 5% just enough to overcome the threshold. They will control from 5 to 6 seats each.  -0-
