Term of compulsory service in Armenian Armed Forces to be shortened

YEREVAN, 21 November. /ARKA/. The Armenian Ministry of Defence has presented a concept of reforming the armed forces, which, in particular, envisages a shortening in the period of compulsory military service. Now it is 24 months.

The changes are expected to come into force from 2027. At the same time, it is planned to increase the number of contract servicemen.

‘Military service under contract is more favourable than military service under conscription in terms of ensuring professionalism, as it is paid, is not round-the-clock, and provides more favourable conditions in terms of social security and income,’ the concept says.

In parallel with raising the qualifications of contract workers, a mechanism has been launched for the transition from fixed-term to contract military service, which is provided mainly through the Defender of the Fatherland programme.

‘This transition is planned to be implemented until 2027. Moreover, it will be carried out in stages in line with the program designed for the development of the Armed Forces, in parallel with the reduction of fixed-term service,’ according to the concept. -0-
