YEREVAN, July 14. /ARKA/. Major Garush Hambartsumyan and captain Sos Elbakyan were mortally wounded in the north-eastern section of the Armenian-Azerbaijani border as a result of shelling from the Azerbaijani side, the spokeswoman for the Armenian Ministry of Defense Shushan Stepanyan said today.
She said the Ministry of Defense shares the bitterness of loss and expresses its support to the families of the deceased servicemen, their relatives and colleagues.
According to the Armenian Ministry of Defense, on July 12 morning, Azerbaijani forces made two attempts to seize an Armenian army outpost in the northern Tavush province, but failed suffering casualties while being repelled by Armenian troops.
According to Shushan Stepanyan, there were no casualties on the Armenian side. On July 12 evening Azerbaijani troops resumed shelling in the direction of the same outpost using an 82-mm mortar and a tank.
On Monday morning, Shushan Stepanyan reported that after two or three hours of calm, the enemy continued shelling the Armenian positions. She said the Armenian forces retaliated by a proportionate response.
Armenian Defense Minister David Tonoyan said that shelling of Armenian positions from Azerbaijan continued with a certain frequency, but is being suppressed by sniper fire, resulting in significant losses to the enemy.
The secretary general of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), Stanislav Zas, called an emergency meeting of the Permanent Council on July 13 to discuss the situation on the Armenian-Azerbaijani frontier, but shortly afterwards the meeting was postponed indefinitely . A spokesman for Zas told RFE/RL’s Armenian service that the CSTO Secretariat and member states needed to ascertain the “format” of the discussion beforehand. -0-
