YEREVAN, July 17. /ARKA/. Two of the four police officers wounded during an armed group’s attack on a police station in Yerevan today morning are in critical condition, deputy chief of Armenian police Hunan Poghosyan said.

"The condition of the two wounded officers is extremely heavy; the other two received wounds of varying severity. One of them is the police cameraman," he said.
Poghosyan expressed condolences to the family of Colonel Arthur Vanoyan, who received a fatal gunshot wound in the attack. He did not mention the number of the attackers.

The attackers said they were demanding the release of Zhirair Sefilyan, an opposition politician arrested last month for alleged possession of firearms and who was accused in the past of plotting a violent overthrow of the government.

Poghosyan said  negotiations were being conducted with the assailants for them to give themselves up and the release of six police officers, held as  hostages.

"If they don't listen to our appeal, we will neutralize them, because killers cannot be dealt with in any other way," said Unan Poghosian. "But for now we are continuing the negotiations."-0-
