YEREVAN, July 16. /ARKA/. Armenia imports medicaments in the amount of $81 million and exports in the amount of about $5 million annually, Gagik Makaryan, Director of the Union of Manufacturers and Entrepreneurs informs.
“Such a volume of import is a good indicator. There are 8-10 large manufacturers of medicaments in Armenia, the production of which can substitute imported medicaments”, he said to the journalists in Friday.
Medicaments have strategic meaning, equal to bread, for the country.
Makaryan said that it is necessary to bring the Armenian medicaments in accordance with international standards.
“Armenia started the process of introduction of the standard GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice). Establishment of the institute of standards is especially important in the sphere of pharmacology as its production is directly related to the health of people”, he said.
Another problem in medicament production in Armenia is shortage of qualified specialists. “Solution of this problem will allow Armenia to become one of large producers of medicaments”, said Makaryan.
Samvel Zakaryan, Head of the Union of Producers and Importers of Armenia said that 50% of produced medicaments in Armenia are exported to NIS countries as correspondence to the standard GMP is not required yet in these countries.
Russia is already moving to this system and in 2014 it will be impossible to import medicaments irrelevant to these standards to Russian Federation. I think that in 2014-2015 we will also move to this standard”, he said.
It is necessary to promote medicaments of local production in the internal market as Armenian consumer does not trust local producers yet.
“Armenian medicaments are equal to European medicaments by their quality and are cheaper”, he said.
Union of Manufacturers and Entrepreneurs and Union of Producers and Importers of Armenia signed a Memorandum of Cooperation on Friday which serves a base for cooperation of two organizations in the sphere of protection of interests of Armenian producers, fair economic competition and development of entrepreneurship.
Currently, 14 pharmacological companies are operating in Armenia. There are 300 medicaments of local production in Armenia. -0--
