YEREVAN, September 24, /ARKA/. Chairman of a parliament committee on social issues, Hakob Hakobian, said today a package of proposed changes to some of Armenian laws would remove a ban on paying old-age and retirement benefits to citizens absent from the country.
Under the current legislation, the pension is paid only in the Armenian territory. If a pensioner is out of the country his or her pension can receive an authorized person for 12 months. In case a pensioner is absent from the country for 10 years, he or she can claim it for three years in the event of coming back to Armenia.
Speaking to reporters Hakob Hakobian said the proposed changes if passed, would remove this ban and Armenian citizens living outside the country could receive their pensions. The lawmaker said the changes will be soon submitted to parliament’s consideration and adoption.
The average monthly pension in Armenia has steadily grown over the past decade but still stands at a modest 2
5,000 drams ($67). According to government data, Armenia’s officially registered workforce numbering some 460,000 people is already outnumbered by 520,000 or so pensioners, hampering a further sizable growth in pensions. -0-
