YEREVAN, September 15, /ARKA/. The government of Armenia has set today November 1, 2011 as the deadline for specification of families who lost their homes in the 1988 Spitak earthquake and who are eligible to receive free government-built housing. The families need to provide all necessary documents by that time.
Urban planning minister Vardan Vardanian said at a cabinet session the government-set deadline applies to the town of Gyumri, the administrative center of northwestern province of Shirak and Akhurian community in the same area.
He said some 2,913 families in the region had been informed before September 1 that they need to provide all necessary documents for a special commission to decide their eligibility. According to him, some 632 families had not submitted any documents so far and of another 2,281 families which did so, 496 were found eligible. The remaining packages of documents are being examined, the minister said.
Prime minister Tigran Sarkisian said this project is the last phase of a government program designed to provide residents of the earthquake zone with housing. He said the program was designed to build new housing for about 7,000 families that lost their homes more than 20 years ago. He said specification of the list of people who relay need housing is complicated because ineligible families are also trying to get on it.
The prime minister said the government has worked out a concept to replace blocks of flats built more than 50 years ago across the country. The construction of special housing is to be launched after the accomplishment of earthquake zone program. ($1 – 374,88 drams). -0-
