Owners of dismantled retail kiosks protest outside Armenian government

Several dozens of owners of retail kiosks which the Yerevan authorities are dismantling have gathered outside the government building today to protest the move.
YEREVAN, September 29. / ARKA /. Several dozens of owners of retail kiosks which the Yerevan authorities are dismantling have gathered outside the government building today to protest the move. Stepan Safarian, a parliament member from the opposition Zharangutyun (Heritage) party who has joined them, told the journalists that the city officials dismantling the kiosks do not have corresponding written orders as a result the owners can not appeal the move.
According to him, the Mayor's Office avoids adopting a written decision on dismantling because that would entail compensation issue. The protesters claimed that the mayor kills petty trade and businesses forcing people to leave the country.
Another group of angry citizens, relatives of young men killed in peace-time army incidents, also protested outside the government building in downtown Yerevan, demanding punishment of those responsible for the deaths of their children.
The Yerevan authorities began dismantling kiosks with expired lease terms causing a violent wave of protests of traders. The Yerevan Municipality said that the term of contracts will not be extended and land will be granted only for newsstands in order not interfere with the normal work of the city.
Owners of dismantled kiosks have already conducted a number of protest actions outside the City Hall, the government and presidential residence. In addition to the official message of Heritage party, the presidential control service received a hundred letters from kiosk owners. Today there are 3,395 retail kiosks in the city, of which about 1,180 are idle. According to the municipality, some 912 kiosks have already been dismantled this year. -0-
