The civil society formed in Armenia is far from being perfect, the member of the parliamentary faction of the Republican Party of Armenia Armen Ashotyan told a press conference.
YEREVAN, November 28. /ARKA/. The civil society formed in Armenia is far from being perfect, the member of the parliamentary faction of the Republican Party of Armenia Armen Ashotyan told a press conference.

However, he said, all necessary measures are being taken to ensure the rule of law and transparency of political processes in the country.

Ashotyan pointed out that it is civil society that ensures the observation of law and fundamental human rights and freedoms at the pre-election stage, namely, the freedom of rallies and processions, freedom of conscience and the press, right to fair trials.

“These are natural and exclusive rights and can only be restricted by the Constitution,” Ashotyan said.
He pointed out that Armenia, as well as other countries, including developed ones, cannot rule out all possible violations of human rights and is fighting this phenomenon by means of the institute of Ombusman and the Constitutional Court.

On the threshold of the presidential election, Ashotyan pointed out the importance of creating minimal conditions for people to be free in exercising their human rights in Armenia, which conditions must be created with the help of civil society.

“This will allow Armenia’s citizens to freely elect and be elected,” Ashotyan said.

The presidential election is to be held in Armenia on February 19, 2008. Among the presidential nominees are RA Prime Minister Serge Sargsyan (RPA), Chairman of the opposition National-Democratic Union Vazgen Manukyan, Chairman of the People’s Party of Armenia Tigran Karapetyan, Chairman of the opposition party New Times Aram Karapetyan, Chairman of the Marxist Party of Armenia David Hakobyan.

The Armenian Revolutionary Federation (ARF) nominated Vice-Speaker of the RA Parliament Vahan Hovhannisyan and Chairman of the Standing Commission for Foreign Relations, RA Parliament, Armen Rustamyan.

The principal presidential nominee from Armenia’s opposition is Armenia’s first President Levon Ter-Petrosyan. –0--
