YEREVAN, August 10. / ARKA /. About 300 schoolchildren dropped out of school in Armenia last year, the coordinator of the UNICEF children's programs in Armenia, Alvard Poghosyan, said today. Speaking at a news conference she said according to a study, the parents of most of these children explain this by their difficult social and economic conditions. In her words, in order to bring these children back to school they need not only the assistance of the ministry of education and science, but also that of the ministry of labor and social affairs.
The director of the National Center for Educational Technologies Artak Poghosyan said because of the transition to the mandatory 12-year education system, a special monitoring system for school attendance will be created, which will use the databases of the police and several ministries to oversee the children not attending school.
He said the monitoring system will help them to quickly understand the reason why the child is not attending school and start acting.
According to him, a pilot not electronic version of this system has already been tested in the Lori region. "In September of this year, we are starting its testing in the same area, but already in electronic form, which will speed up all processes, and we hope that in 2018 this system will start working all over the country," Poghosyan said.
He said according to statistics, 3000 students dropped out of school in 2011, which is ‘a horrifying’ figure. ‘We have managed to reduce this figure to 300, but even if one child does not get an education, this is a national problem," he concluded.
On August 8, 2015, the National Assembly of Armenia unanimously adopted a bill on transition to a mandatory 12-year education system (instead of the previous mandatory 9-year system). The law came into effect on July 1 2017 year. -0-
