YEREVAN, March 15. /ARKA/. About 900,000 civil registration records have been digitized in Armenia since 2000, Argam Stepanyan, the head of the Civil Registry Office of the Armenian Ministry of Justice, told journalists on Wednesday.

He said previously registered civil registration records are kept in the archives in duplicate in order to ensure their safety.

‘According to our calculations, about 13 million civil registration records have been made in Armenia since 1926. At the moment we are digitizing all these documents," he said.

He said it will take years and a lot of money to complete this process. In his words, digitization is important, as documents eventually wear out and deteriorate due to storage conditions.

"The process of digitization is complicated because of the worn-out documents and unclear handwriting; we also have many civil registration records in the Azerbaijani language, but we are digitizing them only if necessary," said Stepanyan.-0-
