Armenia Endorses Lake Sevan Restoration and Protection Initiative for 2026

YEREVAN, September 25. /ARKA/. At a meeting on Thursday, the Armenian government sanctioned an annual program of activities, designed to restore, protect, and utilize the Lake Sevan ecosystem for the year 2026.

The program encompasses 17 specific measures. These measures are particularly focused on enhancing the ecological balance of Lake Sevan, safeguarding the biodiversity of the lake's ecosystems and its surrounding catchment area, promoting the sustainable use of biological resources, designing and constructing treatment facilities, and improving the management system of Sevan National Park.

A significant challenge confronting Lake Sevan, whose resolution is crucial for enhancing its ecosystem, is the elevation of the water level. Additionally, efforts are underway to curb illegal fishing in the lake, particularly during the spawning season.

About Lake Sevan

Lake Sevan serves as the primary source of drinking water in the region and ranks among the largest high-altitude lakes in both Europe and Asia. It is situated in the center of the Armenian Highland at an elevation of 1,914 meters. The lake extends over 70 kilometers from northwest to southeast, with a surface area of nearly 1,500 square kilometers. It is nourished by 28 rivers, which collectively cover a basin area of 2,776 square kilometers.-0-
