Armenia Makes Noteworthy Gains in the 2025 Press Freedom Index, Leading the Region

YEREVAN, May 2. /ARKA/. Armenia has climbed nine spots in the 2025 Press Freedom Index, securing the 34th position, as reported by the international non-governmental organization Reporters Without Borders.
This places Armenia in the "satisfactory" category regarding press conditions. In 2024, the country was ranked 43rd. The report highlights that while Armenia has a pluralistic media environment, it remains polarized, facing significant challenges from disinformation and hate speech, largely driven by internal political tensions and security issues at its borders, as well as its complex relationship with both Russia and the European Union.
In comparison to Armenia, other regional countries have notably lower rankings: Georgia stands at 114th with a “problematic” situation, followed by Turkey at 159th, Azerbaijan at 167th, and Iran at 176th, all characterized by an “extremely serious” press environment.
The index evaluates the working conditions for journalists across 180 countries and territories and is aligned with World Press Freedom Day on May 3. The report indicates that conditions are “extremely difficult” in 42 countries, “difficult” in 48, “problematic” in another 48, while 35 nations are deemed “satisfactory” and just seven have a “good” standing. Leading the rankings are Norway, Estonia, the Netherlands, Sweden, and Finland, with Eritrea, North Korea, China, Syria, and Iran at the bottom. -0-
