Armenia has banned imports of primates and rodents. The Food Safety Inspection Authority said the ban is imposed in view of monkeypox cases recorded in several countries to prevent its penetration into Armenia.

It said the ban applies also to former Soviet republics of Russia, Kazakhstan, Belarus and Kyrgyzstan, which along with Armenia are members of the Eurasian Economic Union (EEU) and to transit of primates and rodents through the territory of Armenia.

More than a hundred cases of this rare infectious disease have been recorded in half a dozen countries around the world since May, prompting the WHO to convene an emergency meeting of experts on May 20 to discuss the monkeypox outbreak.

‘We encourage you all to increase the surveillance of monkeypox to see where transmission levels are and understand where it is going," said Sylvie Briand, WHO director for global infectious hazard preparedness. -0-
