YEREVAN, May 15./ARKA/. Armenia’s Ministry of Education and Science is to inspect the private universities starting from the  next week. The inspection is to check whether the universities comply with new law “On licensing”, Minister Armen Ashotyan said Wednesday.

Since 1 September 2012 the Ministry has severed the control over Armenia’s universities: non-state universities will be now controlled in accordance with the new law “On licensing,” and state universities—through research conducted by some special working group appointed by the minister.

“The inspection is targeted not at closing the universities but revealing whether they meet some minimal quality standards. If they do, not even a single university will be closed,” he said responding to ARKA News Agency.

Ashotyan also said during his tenure the number of private universities decreased from 70 to 35 due to more austere control and license procedures.

“I want to highlight that none of the students who would like to continue education in any other place has ever suffered from our activity,” he added.

There are 16 state and 35 private universities in Armenia. In addition, there are several intergovernmental universities, such as Russian-Armenian (Slavonic) University, American University of Armenia and French University of Armenia.—0-
