YEREVAN, September 11. /ARKA/. Armenian draft evaders may be given a new chance to return to their homeland. Mkhitar Hayrapetyan, an MP from the My Step faction, head of the Armenian National Assembly’s standing committee on science, education, culture, the Diaspora, youth and sports, reported Friday on his Facebook page that relevant legislative changes have been prepared.
"The day before, a new bill was presented, according to which the citizens of Armenia, who are 27 years old, who have not completed the compulsory military service and who have been declared on the criminal wanted list, will be exempted from criminal prosecution if they pay a two-year salary for a contract serviceman," Hayrapetyan wrote on his Facebook page.
In addition, according to him, if the evader undergoes military service under a contract for a period of two years within the next three years after the payment of the specified amount and release from criminal prosecution, then the amount paid by him will be fully returned to him.
Besides, as the lawmaker noted, they will be given the opportunity to go to public service.
However, the amendments presented by the MP do not specify what will happen if, having paid for the contract soldier, the draft evader does not complete military service for three years.
Earlier in Armenia, there was a law on citizens who did not undergo compulsory military service in breach of the established order, which was renewed annually and which allowed the draft evaders to pay a fine, which exempted them from criminal liability for evading military service. The law expired on January 1, 2020. The maximum amount of the fine was 1.8 million drams (about USD 3,76 0). –0--
