YEREVAN, September 16. /ARКА/. Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said at a press conference in Vanadzor on Monday that 3 billion drams will be allocated in 2020 to provide housing for 457 families, who had been affected  by the 1988 earthquake.

“According to the average statistics of recent years, this amount has been increased six times. That is, in 2020 we will allocate 6 times more funds for these purposes than, on average, in recent years,” he explained.

At the same time, the Prime Minister said that the state’s obligations with respect to these 457 families were recorded de jure. "If it turns out that 3 billion are  not enough, we will allocate more funds, because there is no shortage of funds  in the state budget," he added.

According to the head of the government, 560 million drams were released in 2019 to solve the housing issues of 61 families left homeless as a result of the Spitak earthquake in Shirak, Lori and Aragatsotn regions.

On 2018 December 7 Armenia marked the 30th anniversary of a catastrophic earthquake that killed more than 25,000 people and left hundreds of thousands of others homeless. The magnitude 6.8 quake struck northwestern parts of Armenia which then was a Soviet Republic of 3.5 million residents.

The earthquake’s epicenter was near Spitak, a small town that was razed to the ground. Gyumri (known as Leninakan then), Armenia’s second biggest city, was also hit hard. The huge death toll was widely blamed on violation of seismic safety standards. ($ 1 - 476.16 drams). -0-
