YEREVAN, July 30. /ARKA/. Armenia's Investigative Committee said it has uncovered a criminal group engaged in illegal felling of trees that has caused damages worth about 103 million drams.

It said the group was led by a resident of the Haghartzin village in the Dilijan community of the Tavush region. The group included his fellow villagers and members of his family who fell trees in the Parz Lich forest area of the Dilijan National Park reserve for a long time.

According to the investigation, from February 2017 to December 2018 the group illegally cut  a total of 277 trees of various species  in the specified protected forest area.

The leader of the criminal group was charged with illegal cutting of trees, bushes and vegetation. Arrest was chosen as a preventive measure against him. Charges were also brought against other members of the criminal group, including officials and those who acquired timber made from illegally felled trees.

As a result, 10 persons were charged with illegal cutting of trees, bushes and vegetation, and 8 persons were charged with abuse of office.

Two of the accused were put on the wanted list, bail was applied to five as an alternative measure of restraint, and ten were released on recognizance. The preliminary investigation continues. -0-
