According to the approved amendments, the selection of applicants will be carried out by special commissions of 9 people, the composition of which will be determined on a competitive basis.

State prizes will be awarded in such areas as literature and journalism; music and performing art; art; theatrical art; cinema; architecture and urban planning; natural sciences; humanities and social sciences.

One of the awards is named after famous Armenian astrophysicist Victor Hambardzumyan. It will be awarded to foreign scientists in recognition of their achievements in astrophysics, physics and mathematics.

There are also awards for worldwide contribution to high technology and sports.  With the exception of the last two categories, all state awards provide for monetary compensation.
