YEREVAN, June 15. /ARKA/. Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has one more time asked his fellow citizens today to  comply with  health measures to prevent the spread of the coronavirus, as the country's  daily tally of cases rose above 17,000 for the first time.

“Wearing masks, washing hands and maintaining social distance- these are the internationally recognized most effective methods of combating coronavirus. And I want to say, unless  we comply with these requirements, this pandemic will not be overcome or will be overcome after (I apologize for saying so harshly) all  those who are  supposed to die will die, and only after that the numbers will drop. This means that today, by our behavior we sentence hundreds if not thousands of people to death," Pashinyan said during a press briefing.

Pashinyan said the time has come to admit that until this moment the authorities failed to convince or oblige the citizens  to observe the most primitive and effective anti-epidemiological tool - to wear masks.

"We must fix that in Armenia people ignore this demand en masse, and it must be said that this is the first reason for the spread of the coronavirus," the prime minister said.

In this regard, the head of government cited a study published in Forbes magazine, which says  that masks have a significant effect and reduce the spread of the virus.

Pashinyan also cited an excerpt from a study, which states that strict quarantine and social distance did not particularly change the pandemic process, but after the introduction of the mandatory mask wearing, the virus spread  began to decrease.

Pashinyan noted that the same conclusion was drawn by medical journal The Lancet. The prime minister said that the methods and scope of administrative intervention will be expanded, and urged citizens, if necessary, to rebuke  people who do not wear masks and do not observe social distance.

A 30-day state of emergency to curb the spread of coronavirus was declared in Armenia on March 16 and restrictions were imposed on free movement of citizens. The government banned also some types of economic activity. On April 13, the government extended the state of emergency for another month and on May 4 it lifted the ban on almost all types of economic activity and the free movement of citizens, except for public transport. On May 14, the government has again extended the state of emergency for another 30 days.

However, despite the extension, public transport, preschools, trading centers, restaurants and gyms have reopened starting from May 18, and  wearing of masks has become  mandatory in public spaces.

On June 12, the government has extended the state of emergency for another month- until July 13.  Armenia's confirmed cases of Covid-19 have grown to 17,064 over the past 24 hours, the National Center for Disease Control and Prevention reported. It said the death toll from the infection rose to 285 and also, some 6,276 patients have recovered.-0-
