CIS IEC discusses air pollution and climate change

Tajikistan handed today the rotating chairmanship of the CIS International Environmental Council (IEC) to Armenia at the 5th meeting of the Council in Yerevan.

YEREVAN, September 17. /ARKA/. Tajikistan handed today the rotating chairmanship of the CIS International Environmental Council (IEC) to Armenia at the 5th meeting of the Council in Yerevan.
Speaking at the event Armenian Minister of Environment Erik Grigoryan said the priority issues of Armenia's chairmanship in the next 12 months will be the formation of a methodology for calculating air pollution from industrial emissions, establishing cooperation on climate change issues, and waste management.
The participants summed up the results of the implementation of previous decisions and approved the IEC's plan of actions for 2020-2021.
According to Erik Grigoryan, Armenia intends to intensify cooperation in the format of the International Environmental Council.
The chairman of the Committee for Environmental Protection under the Government of Tajikistan Gulmakhmadzoda Kurbonali, focused on the need to formulate common approaches to overcome the effects of climate change, on more active interaction in the field of environmental protection.
“If we used to talk more often about countering global climate change and its possible consequences, now we are talking about preparing the population for survival in new climatic conditions. We will have to live and survive in a new environment, in new conditions. Now it’s clear that our priorities have changed," said Kurbonali

According to him, the legislation of the CIS member countries should also be brought in line with new realities in order to adequately respond to new challenges. The next 6th meeting of the Council will be held in 2020 in Minsk, Belarus.
The CIS IEC was established in 1992 by an agreement on cooperation in the field of ecology and environmental protection. -0-
