Artworks auctions planned to be organized in Armenia

YEREVAN, March 20. /ARKA/. Artworks auctions are planned to be organized in Armenia. The Armenian government approved a draft decision regarding this initiative during its meeting on Thursday.
"The foundation for the development of this sector is being laid. Artworks auctions are an important platform that shapes and reflects the dynamics of the art market. In particular, the absence of this sector has a negative impact on the development of the art market, as the processes of buying and selling works of art are not regulated," noted Armenian Minister of Education, Science, Culture, and Sports Zhanna Andreasyan.
According to her, there is also a lack of cooperation between art galleries, auction houses, and art historians. "It is proposed to adopt a new law on this matter, and new economic mechanisms are planned to be introduced into the art market, promoting the popularization of the works of our artists," Andreasyan said.
The minister added that the adoption of the new law aims to provide an opportunity to attract reputable international auction houses to the Armenian market, with negotiations already underway with several such organizations.
"All transactions are planned to be conducted exclusively in non-cash form, with an emphasis on electronic auctions," Andreasyan noted.
Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, for his part, highly appreciated the importance of this initiative, which could bring significant changes to the development of culture and art.
"If we manage to attract an experienced operator, the Armenian cultural market will become part of the global market. The works of our artists and other artists will be sold more successfully on the international market," he said.
At the same time, Pashinyan expressed dissatisfaction with the fact that Armenia's cultural heritage has been poorly represented in museums and galleries over the past 30 years of independence. "Our schoolchildren and students visit museums and familiarize themselves with our cultural heritage, but in reality, after gaining independence, this sector has been left empty, a vacuum. There are almost no exhibitions of contemporary artists," the prime minister stated.
