Guaranteed minimum pension in Armenia to rise to 25,000 drams

The guaranteed minimum pension in Armenia from January 1, 2019 is to increase by 60% to 25,500 drams (about $52.5), Mesrop Arakelyan, an adviser to Prime Minister Pashinyan, says on his Facebook page.

YEREVAN, September 12. /ARKA/. The guaranteed minimum pension in Armenia from January 1, 2019 is to increase by 60% to 25,500 drams (about $52.5), Mesrop Arakelyan, an adviser to Prime Minister Pashinyan, says on his Facebook page. He says this amount exceeds the threshold of food poverty.
Arakelyan specifies that this is a government-drafted decision that has to be approved by the parliament. "There will no longer be extremely poor pensioners in Armenia, the government does its utmost to ensure a dignified and prosperous old age," Arakelyan wrote.
According to the National Statistical Committee, as of July 1, 2018, there were 461,068 pensioners in the country. The average pension was 40,548 drams.
The upper monthly poverty threshold in Armenia in 2016 was 40,867 drams or $85.1 per adult (up from 29,903 drams in 2008), the lower poverty threshold was 33,418 drams or $69.5, and the extreme poverty threshold was 23,313 drams or $48.5.
The poverty level in Armenia in 2016 (the latest data) was 29.4%, which was 0.4 percentage points less than in 2015. -0-
